moi composites collaborates in an ambitious project together with Autodesk and top industry sponsors to design and 3D print an entire, 6.5 by 2.5 meters, functional, high-performing fiberglass trimaran they called MAMBO - Motor Additive Manufacturing BOat.

This has been possible thanks to moi’s proprietary 3D printing process CFM (Continuous Fiber Manufacturing) and the top-grade expertise from the sponsors: Autodesk, Owens Corning, Osculati, Catmarine, Micad and UCINA.

CFM, differently from other 3D printing processes, is capable of utilizing continuous fiber thermosetting composite material to deposit the fiber only where it’s needed and how it’s needed.

 

Project MAMBO demonstrates larger potentiality of smart manufacturing and 3D printing technologies.

MAMBO used no mold and its uniquely-designed wavy shape is impossible to make using current hand lamination or automated tape laying, fiber placement, or filament winding production.

 

MAMBO is expected to weigh ~800 kg (1760 pounds). The boat will be finished and displayed at future events around the globe.
