A few weeks ago, SMM Composites (Lanester, France) went behind the scenes, showing construction of Nomad 7 — measuring 125 feet long and dubbed “the largest carbon fiber composite catamaran in the world.”
After showing installation of the yacht’s carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) bulkheads, made by Multiplast (Vannes, France) and routed by SMM Composites, the part highlighted here is the nearly 9-meter-long CFRP daggerboards, made by Avel Robotics (Lorient, France).
Among the largest catamaran daggerboards in the world, they are made using automated fiber placement (AFP), designed to optimize both the performance and stability of the boat.
once demolded, SMM Composites completed machining, where precision and control were at the heart of achieving high quality on structures of this size.
SMM Composite is also a manufacturer of large-format composite molds, and has delivered three new series molds for the Candela P-12, an electric hydrofoil ferry for public transportation.
