High-value composite applications
The first project examines applications in the space and defence sectors, which are undergoing significant change. Shorter innovation cycles, increasing production volumes and higher technical requirements highlight the relevance of fibre-reinforced plastics. These materials offer advantages in terms of strength, protective properties, electromagnetic behaviour and chemical resistance.
They also enable cost-efficient production of complex parts, which is particularly important in high-margin markets such as the space (Figure 1) and defence industry. With the growing commercial space market and investments in new launch systems, orbital infrastructure and next-generation mobility concepts, AZL was approached to apply its established methodology of market and technology analysis in this field. While defence remains a relevant area, the current focus is on space applications, as composites can directly contribute to performance, cost efficiency and scalability here.
The project includes structured mapping of market segments, analysis of technological drivers and value chains, and the development of technology trees with component fact sheets. This provides a basis for technology roadmaps and business development strategies. Companies interested in the fast-growing defence and space markets are invited to join the international consortium. With the commercial space industry accelerating and defence applications demanding ever higher performance, participants gain early insights into peak trends and directly contribute to structured analyses of technologies, value chains and business opportunities.
Thermal runaway testing for battery casings
The second initiative addresses a key safety issue in electromobility: battery casings. These casings must withstand thermal runaway events to meet regulatory requirements and OEM standards. Currently used materials such as steel, aluminium and composites are being closely investigated under these extreme conditions due to their individual properties.
